Challenge Course Programs

Indoor Rock Climbing Gym
All Ages
Climbing offers a chance to challenge yourself both physically & mentally at your own pace. Rock climbing is a true adventure sport. Beginners can learn about the sport, exercise and have fun! Experienced climbers can come train and refine their skills. The Prairie Woods ELC instructors are here to help every climber reach new heights! Equipment will be provided. (Meet in basement of Main Building).

Environmental Education Programs

Nature Days
Grades: k - 3rd
WHAT'S THAT?!?! Let's check it out! For three mornings we will explore the natural world in which we live. We will use hands-on activities and games to better understand the forest, prairie and the wetlands at Prairie Woods. (Meet at the main building.)
Date: Tues-Thurs. June 13, 14 15
Time: 8:30am - 11:30am

Full Moon Canoe
Grades: 5th & Up
Come with your friends or family to enjoy the solitude of a Prairie Woods wetland while watching the sun set & the moon rise all in the same evening. Canoe, paddles, life jackets and instruction provided by PWELC staff. Children must be accompanied by an adult. (Meet at farmsite.)

Shooting Sports

MNDNR Firearm Safety
Ages: 11 and up
This class is the field day for the on-line class.
Pre-registration required for limited number of spots.

Youth Shotgun Sporting Clays
Sponsored by Tommy Swenson Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament

Ages: 12-18 years
Have you been to the Gary Westby Sporting Clay Shotgun Range? The clays come from the left, right, straight at you, from behind you, there is even one that rolls on the ground. You may bring your own (12 or 20ga) shotgun or borrow one of ours. There will be two ranges set up; one for 1st time shooters in addition to our regular sporting clay range. Sign up for a 45min. session. Program costs are greatly reduced due to contributions from the Tommy Swenson Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament. (Meet at Westby shooting range.)

Youth sporting Clay & .22 Shoot sponsored by Pheasants Forever
Ages: 11-16 years
This is a great opportunity to shoot for the first time or to improve your already existing shooting skills. included in the class will be instruction on safe gun handling and shooting technique. Firearms, shells and targets will be provided. You may bring your own 12 or 20ga shotgun. All levels of shooters are invited. (Meet at the Westby shooting range.)

Time Travel Programs
 
Game Day at the Pioneer Cabin
Ages: 3rd - 6th
Who's up for some friendly competition? After dressing as a pioneer, unplug for a morning of blind man's bluff, a three legged race, a game of graces (hoops & sticks), kubb and many more pioneer games. If it's raining, we'll see how you do at jacks, pick up sticks and card games. (Meet at farmsite)

Pioneer Skills
Ages: 3rd - 6th
Do you have what it takes to live as a pioneer? Test you knowledge while participating in our version of "Oregon Trail". Brush up or develop your compass skills. Try your hand at the cross cut saw & buck saw. If time allows, you might go home with a craft as well. (Meet at farmsite)

Pioneer Day
Ages: 3rd - 6th
Help Anna Danielson get ready for fall. Find out what pioneer life was really like with this ALL day adventure. We'll start the day by dressing as a pioneer. Then we'll get busy with our indoor chores which will include preparing our own pioneer lunch. Followed by some outdoor activities such as laundry, cutting wood & beating rugs. After chores we should find time to play a few games, make a craft & maybe evn end witha a swet treat of homeade ice cream! (Mett at farmsite)

Forkhorn Camps

MDHA FORKHORN I CAMP
Ages 11-16
This firearms safety course is a part of an overnight summer camp where participants will sleep in tents and cook their meals over a coleman stove.
This camp is designed to teach beginning hunting skills. It will provide extensive hands-on instruction in basic safety and shooting techniques for rifle, shotgun, and archery. It will also include classes on Whitetail deer ecology, outdoor survival skills, and Hunters ethics along with traditional camp activities like canoeing and rock climbing.
Camp starts: Sunday,July 9th 2017 @ 3:00
Camp ends: Thursday, July 13th @ 1:00
Cost: $380

MDHA FORKHORN II CAMP
Ages 12-16
This firearms safety course is a part of an overnight summer camp where participants will sleep in tents and cook their meals over a coleman stove.
This camp is for youth who have completed their Firearms Safety Training. Forkhorn II goes beyond the basics and focuses on archery and deer hunting. Campers will learn to properly shoot compound bows and much more. Campers will also participate in traditional camp activities such as rock climbing, canoeing and more. Participants will earn their MN DNR Bow Hunting Certification.

Camp ends: Thursday, July 20th 2017 @ 1:00

WRIGHT AND STEARNS COUNTY PROGRAMS

Summer Program Kick Off Day for Wright County Parks
Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, Wright County Parks and the Camp Mantiou YMCA for an outdoor recreation event at Bertram Chain of Lakes. Experience the Prairie Woods ELC fleet of Canoes, Kayaks, and the 34’ Voyageur Canoe. The Prairie Woods ELC Theater will also be presenting the LORAX Puppet Show.

Paddle Wright
Throughout the summer Wright County Parks will offer the “Paddle Wright” series.
“Paddle Wright” will be a variety of paddling options guided by Prairie Woods Environmental learning Center. All programs are 2 hours in duration. Equipment and instruction will be provided. Pre-registration required along with signed waiver. Minors must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
-17 foot Canoes (2-4 people per boat). This program will be for people ages 8 years old and up.
-10 foot sit upon Kayaks (1 person per boat). This program will be for people 11 years old and up.
-34 foot Voyageur Canoe (18 person Max). This program will be for all ages.
$5/person max $15 for families.

STEARNS COUNTY BIG CANOE CRUISES
Just out for a cruise….IN A 34 FOOT CANOE. Join Stearns County Parks and Prairie Woods Environmental Learning center to help row, row, row our boat as we cruise around lakes in Stearns County Parks. We will provide the boat, life jackets, paddles, and nature interpretation. All you have to do is provide the motor. *Pre-registration is required for all participants along with signed waiver. Minors must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

Cost: Program paid for by the grant obtained by Stearns and Wright Counties from the Greater Minnesota Parks and Trails Commission with funds provided from the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.
