Shooting Sports

Gary Westby Educational Shooting Sports Range

The Gary Westby Educational Shooting Sports range offers opportunities for sportsmen, sportswomen, and youth. The Range consists of a five-stand sporting clays range and a ten-bench .22 smallbore rifle range.

Programs include:

  • Firearms safety classes for youth
  • MDHA Forkhorn Day Camp 
  • Arrange a private group (4H, FFA, Scouts, Families, etc)
  • Other special events

These programs are designed to educate people about safe, responsible, and ethical behavior while hunting and using firearms. If you would like to set up a shooting sports program at Prairie Woods ELC please give us a call at 320-354-5894 for more information.

2024 Firearm Safety Classes:
*Preregistration is required for all firearm safety classes*

MN DNR Firearm Safety Field Day for online Course.
This class is the required field day for youth that have completed the MN DNR firearm Safety Online Class.
Date: Saturday, April 27th 2024
Time: 8:00am-4:00 (firearm check-in starting at 7:30)
Cost: $7.50

Youth Sporting Clay & .22 Shoot – Sponsored by Pheasants Forever.
Ages: 11-16
This is a great opportunity to shoot for the 1st time OR improve your already existing shooting skills. Safe gun handling instruction will be included in this class. Firearms, Shells, and targets will be provided. You may bring your own 12 or 20ga shotgun. meal to follow program (Meet at Westby shooting range)
Date: Saturday, August 10th 2024
Time: 9:00 am-  Noon
Cost: $5

MDHA FORKHORN I CAMP – Day Camp Format
Camp is open to 11-15 year olds.

This camp is designed to teach beginning hunting skills. It will provide extensive hands-on instruction in basic safety and shooting techniques for rifle, shotgun, and archery. It will also include classes on Whitetail deer ecology, outdoor survival skills, and Hunters ethics along with traditional camp activities like canoeing and rock climbing.

MN DNR Firearm Safety Certification included.
Dates: June 10th -14th 2024
Monday – Thursday hours will be 9:00-4:00
Friday 9:00-12:00 (range day)

Cost: $350
