Prairie Restoration in Progress

We are excited to share that a major habitat restoration project is underway on the property adjacent to 11th Street. Through a grant partnership with Pheasants Forever, we are converting the existing brome grass area to native prairie grasses and wildflowers. This multi-year effort will improve habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife while enhancing the natural beauty of the area.

The site may look rough at times as we remove non-native grasses and prepare the soil — but this is all part of establishing a healthy, diverse native prairie. We appreciate your patience and support as this “prairie in progress” takes shape!

Biking:
Start your adventure with 4 miles of exhilarating natural surface bike trails! All trails begin at the gravel parking lot adjacent to the maintenance shop.

Hiking:
Explore over 6 miles of varied trails at Prairie Woods, weaving through rolling glacial terrains, dense woods, and expansive prairies, with scenic views of peaceful ponds and wetlands. These trails cover a significant portion of PWELC’s 560 acres, making them a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

Cross-Country Skiing:
During the winter months, snow-permitting, our trails are transformed into groomed tracks for cross-country skiing, specially prepared to enhance the skiing experience. For the safety of all, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Avoid walking or snowshoeing on groomed ski trails, especially in the classic tracks. Doing so can create holes and ruts that freeze into hazardous obstacles, which can cause injuries.
  • Help maintain the quality and safety of these trails by using them only for skiing.

Welcoming Your Canine Companions:
We understand that dogs are part of your family and invite you to bring them along on your trail adventures. Please keep dogs on a leash at all times and maintain control to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Remember that for the safety and comfort of all visitors, dogs are not permitted on the groomed ski trails or inside buildings, with the exception of service animals.
